Scandinavian Christmas Ornaments

The Scandinavian Christmas tree decorations typically fall into three categories:

  • Ornaments
  • Candle holders
  • Strings of lights and flags

Also, there is usually a star or an angel at the top of the tree.

On Christmas Eve, candles are placed in candle holders and lit, creating a beautiful and dazzling display.

In Denmark and Sweden, it is typical also to string the national flag around the tree, and strings of white lights are seen across the region.

Christmas Ornaments as heirlooms in Scandinavian families

Passing down Christmas ornaments from one generation to the next is very common. In the same way that making Christmas Ornaments is very a Holiday pastime that everyone has grown up with. Both with friends and family.

And yes, these ornaments – such as pleated paper hearts – can also be handed down from one generation to the next – many times over.

Of course, paper is quite fragile. That’s exactly why we’ve decided to expand our collection of Scandinavian Christmas Ornaments with a selection made from high-quality metal in red and gold.

The importance of light and hygge at Christmas time

If a Scandinavian household only has one type of Christmas tree decoration, it will usually be ornaments or strings of lights. Ornaments because they can be homemade or family heirlooms. And the use of lights is a very important part of the Christmas season in Scandinavia due to the very few hours of sunlight.

The Scandinavian (or Danish, to be exact) concept of “hygge” is often focused on enjoying the warmth indoors and eating various Christmas treats. All while adding light in many forms to our homes. Both candlelight and other sources of light (such as from a Christmas tree).

Also, having strings of light on our Christmas tree makes the other Christmas Ornaments stand out even more. Particularly our new collection made from red and shiny gold metal.

Step-by-Step Guide to Create a Braided Heart

Step 1: Prepare the Strips

Cut the Paper: Choose two contrasting colors of paper. Cut two strips from each color, each strip measuring 2 inches wide and 8 inches long.
Fold the Strips: Fold each strip in half lengthwise. This will make it easier to weave and create a symmetrical heart.

Step 2: Weave the Braids

Interlock the Strips: Take one folded strip from each color and interlock them at the folds to form a plus sign. Make sure the folds are at the center.
Weave the Strips: Start weaving by inserting the end of one strip under and over the strips of the other color. Continue this pattern, alternating between the two colors until you reach the end of the strips.
Secure the Weave: Apply a small amount of glue at the end of each strip to secure the weave. Press firmly and let it dry.

Step 3: Form the Heart Shape

Shape the Braided Piece: Once the weave is secure and dry, gently shape the braided piece into a heart by bending the sides inward.
Glue the Ends: Apply glue to the ends of the strips to hold the heart shape together. Hold the strips in place until the glue sets.

Tips for Personalizing Your Braided Heart

Add Glitter: Sprinkle glitter on the edges of your heart for a sparkling touch.
Use Ribbons: Attach a ribbon at the top to hang your heart as a decoration.
Customize with Stickers: Add stickers or markers to write messages or draw patterns on your heart.
Experiment with Sizes: Try making smaller or larger hearts by adjusting the size of the strips.

Creating these kind of hearts is a delightful and simple craft that you can personalize in countless ways. It's a thoughtful gift for loved ones and a beautiful addition to your home decor.
